Detailed description of Old Hickory Golf Club

Old Hickory Golf Club is a semi-private 18-hole golf course located in Woodbridge, Virginia.

The course, designed by Timothy Freeland, first opened for play in 2003.

The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The course is evenly divided with nine holes north of Beaver Creek and nine holes south. The fairways were carved from forests of mature hardwoods.

Black tees: par-72, 7,077 yards, 74.5 / 145
Gold tees: par-72, 6,615 yards, 72.1 / 140
White tees: par-72, 5,980 yards, 69.1 / 131(M), 75.1 / 35(W)
Raspberry: par-72, 5,143 yards, 70.4 / 125

#1 is a 380-yard par-4 with a lake to the right. The fairway is heavily bunkered on the left side and next to the green.

#2 is a 400-yard par-4. W, waterfalls start to the left of the elevated tee area and run down under the trees and into the lake.

#3, a par-5 has a reachable in two, heavily bunkered green. This hole has a split fairway here with left and right landing areas next to the central bunker area. You have a risk-reward shot as you approach the green. You can risk going over the bunkers and making the green in two or taking a safer route to the right or left. If you attempt to fly over the bunkers, accuracy is paramount.

#6 is a strategic par-5 (530 yards from the back tees) that requires three shots to get to the green. You can't take any shortcuts here. The green has a false front that can cause a ball to roll back down that front.

#8, a 420 yard par-4 has an elevated tee box. You're firing downhill to a fairway with bunkers on the right and left.

#9 is a very 490-yard par 4 from the back tees and 320 yards from the forward trees.

#13, a 180 yard par-3 is dramatic with huge bunkers surrounding an elevated green.

You'll need a long tee shot to carry a ravine off the tee at No. 14, a great par-5 that plays at 550 yards from the back tees. Your second shot needs more precision than length due to the great number of quartz boulders left on this hole. The green rests on a ledge with rock outcroppings on the left. The green is heavily bunkered as well. You have to fly the ball to the green.

#18 is a tough, long par-5 - 620 yards from the back tees with a natural waste area to the left and you have to hit your ball over a ravine to reach the green. It takes three quality shots to make it to the green in regulation.

In the area visiting family and decided to get an early morning round in before the heat index rises above 90......good choice. This 2003 Timothy Freeland design takes you through a rolling wooded landscape that frames each hole hiding those homes that lurk within. I got the Senior/Military discount price of $58.00 from the regular $84. I first thought it seemed a little expensive until I got on the course and viewed the layout and conditions. This course throws everything at you as you journey from tee to that magic carpet, we call "The Dance Floor". Fairway traps, meandering fairways, ponds and marsh areas, and those many elevated protected greens.

We (Don ex-Army retired) chose to play the Gold tees @ 3,235/3,380yds / 72.8 / 144 except holes #8 and #9 Par 4's that played 407/444yds respectfully.......Too Long. The Front 9-hole descriptions listed above are very descriptive and don't need repeating except for #6......it's a VERY steep false front that will reject short shots. The #9 is one long climb on this Par 4 Hpc 1 hole and stay to the LH side all the way home.

The Back 9 starts out with three (3) Par 4's 383-402yds with large fairway traps on both sides and greens with front traps. The #14 Par 5 at 555yds really is set up to catch those that stray to the RH side with traps and trees tight to the fairway. The #16 Par 4 at 387yds has a ravine crossing 150yds out from the green and don't miss long or it's Gone. The #17 Par 3 is a 196-112yd shot with a pond down the RH side and the green tucked behind it, framed with traps. The #18 Par 5 is a long narrow uphill climb to a hidden green 630-452yds and its Hcp 2 rating. We played it at 601yds and I can only say, "Stay to the RH side" because the left side is OB.

Thanks Don for ALL the tips on landing areas that helped me to a 38/38 w/31putts on this great course that you must play if you're in this area.
